No-exam life insurance

Which applicants qualify, how the process works, and what happens if you're not eligible for expedited underwriting.

Accelerated underwriting is now standard at many carriers: if you fall within their age range and coverage limits, they can approve you based on the application, pharmacy records, driving history, and other data they already own—no exam visit needed. For some applicants, approval comes the same day. Your quotes will say whether each carrier requires an exam, might require one, or doesn't require one for that product.

What it changes

Skipping an exam is not the same as skipping underwriting. Your answers are verified; a policy written from false information can be challenged within the first two years. If the carrier finds anything questionable in its records, it may still require an exam or labs—and you can choose then whether to go forward.

Who tends to qualify

Usually people under about 60 who are asking for amounts within the carrier's expedited underwriting limit, have no serious health issues in their background, and haven't used tobacco in the past year or more. Some carriers will accept your most recent bloodwork from a doctor's visit instead of ordering a new exam.

If you do need an exam, it's typically a 20 to 30 minute appointment conducted by a paramedic at your home or office in the Newport Beach area, at no cost to you. For healthy applicants, exam results sometimes move you into a better rate class, so the exam isn't always a drawback.
